Intoxicated Civic Volunteer in Kolkata Collides with Bike, Leading to Arrest

A civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police was arrested on Saturday for allegedly hitting a protesting student with his motorcycle while in an inebriated state on Friday evening. The incident occurred during a protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, where the motorcycle struck one of the students. The civic volunteer has been identified as Gangasagar Golde.

Incidentally, Sanjay Roy, the only arrested suspect in the RG Kar rape and murder case, was also a civic volunteer with the city police. A complaint has been filed against traffic sergeant Tarakeswar Puri, who was seen engaging in a verbal altercation with the protesting students after they surrounded the civic volunteer following the incident. A video capturing the event has gone viral, although its authenticity has not been independently verified.

Late Friday evening, former students of Rabindra Bharati University were protesting at BT Road on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. During this protest, the motorcycle-borne civic volunteer allegedly struck one of the participants. The other protesters immediately surrounded the volunteer and began their protest. Initially, the civic volunteer argued with the protesters but was later seen apologizing in the viral video. Despite this, the protesters refused to let him go.

“We have been pardoning for a long time and that exactly has resulted in the current situation,” one of the protesters remarked in the video. When traffic sergeant Tarakeswar Puri attempted to intervene and assist the civic volunteer, the protesters engaged in a heated exchange with him.

Subsequently, from early Saturday morning, the students blocked the busy BT Road and continued their protest. The demonstrations lasted until around 9:30 A.M. on Saturday and were only called off after news emerged that the accused civic volunteer had been arrested.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose issued a statement claiming to be in fast-track mode in addressing the concerns of the parents of the RG Kar tragedy victim. “Upon receiving a heart-wrenching letter from the parents of the RG Kar horror victim, the Governor rushed to Delhi to present their grievances to the Home Minister. The Governor informed the Home Minister of the severity of the situation and the public outcry against the horrific incident,” the statement read.
