Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of swift justice in cases involving crimes against women, asserting that it will enhance their sense of safety. He also highlighted the judiciary’s role as the guardian of the Constitution, praising the Supreme Court and the judiciary for upholding this responsibility. Speaking at the inaugural session of a national conference of the district judiciary, attended by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, PM Modi noted the unwavering trust the people of India have in the Supreme Court and the judiciary.
Reflecting on the Emergency period, which he described as a “dark” time, the Prime Minister commended the judiciary for upholding fundamental rights during that era. On issues of national security, he stated that the judiciary has preserved national integrity by prioritizing national interests.
In light of recent tragic incidents, including the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata and the sexual assault on two kindergarten girls in Thane, Modi highlighted the gravity of atrocities against women and the safety of children as societal concerns. He stressed that delivering faster justice in such cases would provide greater assurance of safety for half of the population.
PM Modi also noted the presence of stringent laws to combat crimes against women and called for better coordination within the criminal justice system to ensure swift justice.
