Artificial intelligence startups have taken the lead in attracting global venture capital investments in the early months of 2025. A report from Pitchbook reveals that AI and machine learning ventures garnered 57.9% of all venture capital funding worldwide in the first quarter, more than doubling their share from 28% in the previous year. This surge was even more pronounced in North America, where AI firms received 70% of the venture capital.
### AI Investment Soars to $73 Billion in Early 2025
The AI industry globally has raised a staggering $73 billion in the first quarter of 2025, surpassing half of the total investment AI startups received throughout 2024. OpenAI led the charge with a historic $40 billion financing round concluded on March 31, with significant contributions from SoftBank. Another noteworthy event was Anthropic securing a $3.5 billion Series E round, highlighting the growing interest in foundational AI technology and applications. This rush of investments is driven by a competitive market and the fear of missing out (FOMO) among investors, who are eager to back early market leaders.
Despite the enthusiasm, some industry experts caution against overly rapid investment. Nnamdi Okike, from 645 Ventures, points out the risk of unsustainable valuations stemming from the aggressive funding pace. Meanwhile, the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors, though still trailing, have shown signs of recovery. CryptoRank data indicates that these sectors attracted $4.8 billion in funding in the same period, marking a significant increase from the previous quarters and showcasing the strongest quarter since Q3 2022 as they begin to regain investor interest, especially in the U.S. where regulatory perspectives are evolving.
Galaxy Ventures, under Mike Novogratz’s leadership, is poised to secure $180 million by June to support early-stage startups in the crypto and blockchain space, focusing on payments and stablecoins. Alongside, Haun Ventures is targeting a $1 billion raise for new crypto investment funds, half of which will support early-stage ventures in the digital asset domain.
In the competitive landscape of venture capital, AI startups are clearly in the lead for now, drawing unprecedented levels of investment as the technology continues to advance rapidly. The growing interest in AI and machine learning, alongside a cautious but notable resurgence in crypto and blockchain investments, paints a dynamic picture of the current state of tech funding.
