The Rhodes Scholar and liberal media commentator stated in a segment that aired on Thursday, March 6, that cryptocurrency is a scam, criticizing the White House for “playing this game.” MSNBC Host Rachel Maddow compared cryptocurrency to Beanie Babies, saying, “Cryptos operate on the same idea. They have no inherent value at all, but people speculate, hoping…” President Donald Trump had signed an executive order earlier that day to establish a national digital asset reserve. White House crypto czar David Sacks mentioned, “The US will not sell any Bitcoin deposited into the Reserve. It will be kept as a store of value. The Reserve is like a digital Fort Knox for the cryptocurrency, often called ‘digital gold.’”

“It’s worth looking at this crypto thing a little bit,” Maddow noted on her show, labeling it a “deeply old-fashioned simple scam,” pointing toward the White House.

Maddow’s comparison between Beanie Babies and Bitcoin is flawed. While Beanie Babies had a brief surge in the 1990s and never regained their peak values, Bitcoin has seen consistent growth since its launch on January 3, 2009. Critics have often declared Bitcoin a fad, yet it continues to reach new all-time highs, with Bitcoin creating 84,000 new crypto millionaires in 2024 according to a CNBC report. Unlike Beanie Babies, Bitcoin operates in a liquid and transparent market, engineered to serve as a financial product with inherent value, durability, and fungibility.

While Maddow argued that cryptocurrencies and Beanie Babies share a similar principle of hyped speculation, the intrinsic qualities and scarcity economics of Bitcoin tell a different story. Prominent financial figures believe in Bitcoin’s potential as part of the next phase in the internet’s evolution. Despite her critical view, the market demand and governmental interest in Bitcoin suggest a future of increasing value, much unlike the Beanie Babies phenomenon.
