Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton have caused widespread devastation, affecting millions across several states in the U.S., including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. In response, various Web3-focused organizations are facilitating cryptocurrency donations to assist affected communities.
The Giving Block, a crypto charity donation platform, has launched the “Hurricanes Helene & Milton Emergency Response Fund” to support relief efforts. According to co-founder Pat Duffy, The Giving Block collaborates with numerous nonprofits to address essential needs such as medical care, food, shelter, and humanitarian aid for impacted children, families, and animals. They work with renowned organizations like “Save The Children” and “Project Hope” to enable crypto donations, and Jared Isaacman, CEO of their parent company, Shift4, is matching the next $500,000 in contributions.
The Blockchain Association, a nonprofit supporting digital assets, has developed an online directory of charities providing relief and recovery services in the wake of the hurricanes. Curtis Kincaid, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications, highlighted that these charities are offering vital services like medical care, food, and shelter. Givepact, a crypto philanthropy platform, is also raising awareness about supporting relief efforts, emphasizing local organizations like “Florida Wildlife Federation” and “BeLoved Asheville.”
Crypto donations are on the rise, with the Giving Block’s Annual Industry Report revealing that over $2 billion has been donated using cryptocurrency as of January 2024. Alicia Maule, co-founder and CEO of Givepact, noted that crypto donors typically contribute significantly more than cash donors, making them a valuable resource for nonprofits. Despite the benefits, challenges such as regulatory uncertainty and the need for education persist.
