South Korean police have uncovered an illegal gambling operation disguised as a cryptocurrency mining center in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province. The Gwangsan Police Station reported on April 9 that officers are interrogating the operator, suspected of violating the Game Industry Promotion Act.

During the raid, police seized 50 gaming machines and two kiosks from an unregistered office. Investigators revealed that the operator had modified mobile games for play on PCs, charging players 50,000 won (approximately $34) per hour and rewarding high scores with cash. The operation is estimated to have generated 140 million won ($95,000) in illegal profits. The facility was allegedly disguised as a venue for virtual currency mining and exchange.

The police are actively searching for accomplices and have vowed to continue cracking down on illegal gaming rooms, citing their threat to the public economy. This follows a similar crackdown last September when authorities arrested seven individuals involved in a crypto-powered drug dealing operation in the same province.
