Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, was reportedly arrested in France on Saturday evening after disembarking from his private jet. Local media indicated the arrest was connected to alleged offenses associated with the popular messaging app.
According to unnamed sources, TF1info broke the news on Saturday evening, stating that Durov was detained at Le Bourget Airport, located northeast of Paris. Despite holding French and UAE passports, the Russian embassy immediately took steps to clarify the situation.
The media reported that Durov’s arrest was linked to “suspicious” activities conducted by the messaging app. Potential charges include terrorism, narcotics, complicity, fraud, and money laundering. Following the arrest, Toncoin, which has significant historical and current ties with Telegram, saw a sharp decline. The value of TON dropped from $6.75 to under $5.5 in less than 12 hours. CoinGecko data shows a 19% daily decrease in the asset’s value.
