Billionaire Elon Musk has unveiled a rare glimpse into Tesla’s latest innovation, Cortex, a state-of-the-art AI training supercluster under construction at Tesla Headquarters in Austin. In a recent social media post, the Tesla CEO showcased the Cortex supercluster, an extensive array of supercomputers. “Video of the inside of Cortex today, the giant new AI training supercluster being built at Tesla HQ in Austin to solve real-world AI,” Musk wrote.

The Cortex facility is set to play a pivotal role in developing and refining Tesla’s AI models, aimed at enhancing the company’s electric vehicles, energy products, and other technologies.

Earlier in July, Elon Musk announced that Tesla would activate a 50,000 GPU cluster, expanding its Dojo custom AI chip supercomputer. This cluster will significantly boost Tesla’s capabilities in full-scale driving (FSD) and other AI initiatives.

Musk also addressed internal communications from Nvidia about plans to ship thousands of GPUs reserved for Tesla to his private ventures X and xAI. He clarified that these GPUs are essential for populating Tesla’s data centers and supporting its AI projects.

Tesla’s CFO, Vaibhav Taneja, noted that the company still anticipates capital expenditures to exceed $10 billion despite a dip in Q2 spending. Musk also conducted a poll asking users if Tesla should invest $5 billion in his AI startup xAI.

These announcements follow Tesla’s second-quarter earnings report, which fell short of expectations with a decline in revenue and profits. However, Elon Musk remains dedicated to advancing Tesla’s AI capabilities, stressing the necessity of making Dojo successful due to the high demand for Nvidia GPUs. Musk aims to have 8,000 H100-equivalent training units operational by year-end.

Musk’s xAI is also set to release Grok 2 in August and commence work on Grok 3, which will compete with OpenAI’s GPT-5.
